((define RUNNING MAN)
Running Man is one type of a Scavenger Hunt Contest. As the names
Scavenger Hunt and Running Man suggest, participating teams have to
hunt down a running man and identify the running man from possible
other fake running men also slithering about.
In a strictly limited time slot of only 60 minutes, teams search the
entire hotel for any signs of the running man. Simply, the team that
detects and identifies the original running man wins the contest. If
at the end of the allotted 1 hour no team has identified the original
running man, then the team that came the closest to discovering the
running man is declared the winner.
)
((define HOW_RUNNING_MAN_WORKS)
The actual running man can be anything from a member of the PAKCON
staff, a security guard, a receptionist, to someone else hired from
outside. What is important is that the running man is a normal person
enjoying their time at PAKCON around many other normal-looking
people. At any given time the running man could be attending a
briefing in the conference room, fixing themselves a snack at the
refreshments stall, talking to other geeks visiting PAKCON, or even
taking snapshots of the participating teams.
The running man will be carrying a wireless-enabled device with them.
That device called an Access Point (AP) will be broadcasting a
wireless signal. The signal will have been intentionally dulled so
that it becomes more difficult to spot the AP. At a fixed IP and
having a unique MAC address, the AP will be broadcasting a secret,
encrypted message over an HTTP webserver. The encrypted message can
only be had by detecting the correct AP and accessing that AP's
webserver using a web browser. Since the AP is moving around and its
signal is low, it would be difficult to detect the AP from a far away
spot.
Teams will have to bring their own wireless-enabled equipments. The
equipments can be anything from a laptop, PDA to a WAP-enabled mobile
phone. Also, teams are free to make any modifications and extensions
to their equipments to boost their equipments' wireless signal
tracking abilities, such as attaching specially designed antennas, or
any such devices. Teams are also free in their choice to run
whichever wireless tracking signal utility they are comfortable with.
In addition to that, the teams are also required to bring a small
notepad on which to take important notes regarding the actually
running man AP.
)
((define HOW_TO_WIN_THE_RUNNING_MAN_CONTEST)
Since the actual running man AP will be broadcasting an encrypted
message on its webserver, teams will have to quickly cache that
message on their systems, of course, once they have detected the
correct AP and established a connection to its webserver. That is
because the running man AP being mobile may or may not quickly
disappear from the location on which a previous signal from the AP was
caught. Therefore, instantly caching the message is the best
strategy.
The encrypted message will have been encrypted with a very basic
cipher, such a simple Caesar Cipher, or a Monoalphabetic Cipher, or a
Playfair-Cipher, or a Hill Cipher, or any other fundamentally basic
cipher. Once a team has identified the cipher used, they will have to
write a sample program or script to decrypt the entire message --
choice of language to use to code the script rests with the teams. Now,
here comes the shocking part. The message itself will be composed of
a number of hints. The hints will all relate to some specific part of
the whole PAKCON event. The teams will have to guess what each
individual hints point to and will have to produce the actual message
by putting the hints together. Once the actual message is figured
out, the teams will have to "re-locate" the actual running man AP.
This time instead of just detecting the AP, they will have to identify
the person carrying the device broadcasting the AP, and will have to
tell that person the message they have figured out. If the message is
correct and the person identified by the teams as the running man is
the correct running man, the running man will show them a PAKCON
badge and declare them winners.
)
((define RESTRICTIONS)
There are apparently no restrictions as to what piece of equipment
teams can use. Teams are free to choose whichever AP tracking utility
they can get their hands on. The teams are also free to move anywhere
in the hotel to search for the running man AP. If the teams are
comfortable with sharing notes with other teams, they can also do that
during the stretch of the contest. Obviously, there will be security
guards all over the place denying team members access to certain
places. While teams can insist the guards on granting them access and
can bypass the guards silently, at no time will any member of the team
get into a heated argument or an ensuing quarrel with the security
guards. If any team member is caught committing such an act or if a
complaint is registered to the PAKCON Running Man staff, provided
that the complaint is legitimate, the culprit team will be
disqualified at the spot. If the teams need to search the conference
rooms where briefings will be going on, they will have to do so
silently from the back without disturbing anyone.
)
((define HOW_TO_REGISTER)
Like Capture The Fag contest, registration is on a first come first
serve basis. Only five (5) teams will be selected and allowed to
participate in the Running Man Contest. The teams can have anyone as
their member, but the total number of members in each time will not be
more than four (4).
To register, teams will have to fill out the registration form
available on the following UR and send back to us:
http://www.pakcon.org/contest/Pak%20Con%20-%20Contest%20Registration.doc
Once any request for registration is received, a member from Pak
Con's Registration Committee will contact the team which applied
for registration.
