WAR DRIVING

War Driving is very similar to the Running Man Contest. It is a kind
of a Scavenger Hunt Contest in which teams run around the hotel
looking for signals coming from wireless-enabled devices called Access
Points (APs). The exact total number of APs hidden is not known until
the end of the contest. And the team that detects the most AP wins
   the contest.

HOW WAR DRIVING WORKS

An Access Point (AP) is a wireless-enabled device that broadcasts a
wireless signal. Any other wireless-enabled device can receive an
AP's signal and can transmit data to it once a connection has been
established. Sometimes the intensity of an AP is dulled by some
means, which means that it becomes even difficult to detect signals
coming from the AP from a far away spot. The receiving device has to
be at a close proximity to the AP to detect it.

For the War Driving Contest, the PAKCON War Driving staff will have
hid an unknown number of APs all over the place. The APs can be
present anywhere, from somewhere in the conference rooms, inside
refreshments stalls, to behind large objects within the hotel. Those
APs will be broadcasting signals all the time. Unlike the AP in the
Running Man Contest, the APs installed for the War Driving Contest will
be stationary, meaning they will remain set at the place where they
were put by the PAKCON staff.

Teams will have to bring their own wireless-enabled equipments.
The equipments can be anything from a laptop, PDA to a WAP-enabled
mobile phone. Also, teams are free to make any modifications and
extensions to their equipments to boost their equipments' wireless
signal tracking abilities, such as attaching specially designed
antennas, or any such devices. Teams are also free in their choice
to run whichever wireless tracking signal utility they are
   comfortable with.

HOW TO WIN THE WAR DRIVING CONTEST

A total of six (6) teams will participate in the War Driving Contest.
Each team can have no more than four (4) members. Teams can select
any individual to be their member.

In a fixed time slot of either 30 minutes or 60 minutes, teams will
have to detect as many APs as they can. At the end of the allotted
time slot, the team with the most detected APs will win the
contest. As proof of the teams' claims of having detected a
certain number of APs, teams will have to note down both the IP
address and the MAC address of the APs. At the end of the contest,
teams will be asked to provide the list of APs they will have
detected along with the APs' IP and MAC addresses. This list will
be compared with the list of known APs and based on the results of
the comparison, winner of the War Driving Contest will be
declared. If any team either fails to maintain a list or forgets
to, that team will be disqualified from the contest on the spot.

RESTRICTIONS

There are apparently no restrictions as to what piece of equipment
teams can use. Teams are free to choose whichever AP tracking
utility they can get their hands on. The teams are also free to
move anywhere in the hotel to search for APs. Obviously, there
will be security guards all over the place denying team members
access to certain places. While teams can insist the guards on
granting them access and can bypass the guards silently, at no time
will any member of the team get into a heated argument or an
ensuing quarrel with the security guards. If any team member is
caught committing such an act or if a complaint is registered to
the PAKCON War Driving staff, provided that the complaint is
legitimate, the culprit team will be disqualified at the spot. If
the teams need to search the conference rooms where briefings will
be going on, they will have to do so silently from the back without
   disturbing anyone.

REGISTRATION

Like every other contest to be held at PAKCON II, registration
for the War Driving Contest is on a first come first
serve basis. Only six (6) teams will be selected and allowed to
participate in the War Driving Contest. The teams can have anyone
as their member, but the total number of members in each time will
not be more than four (4).

To register, teams will have to fill out the registration form
available on the following UR and send back to us:
   http://www.pakcon.org/contest/Pak%20Con%20-%20Contest%20Registration.doc

Once any request for registration is received, a member from Pak
Con's Registration Committee will contact the team which applied
   for registration.
